THE MOUSEHOLE CAT – ANTONIA BARBER £5.99 (Hardback and DVD also available) |
If there is one picture book that sums up Cornwall it’s The Mousehole Cat. Loved by everyone and read down through the generations! The Mousehole Cat is based on an old Cornish legend. It tells the story of Tom Bawcock through the eyes of his cat, Mowzer. One winter, the Great Storm-Cat comes snarling and leaping at the harbour walls so that no boat can go out to fish. When all the food in the village is gone, Tom decides he must brave the terrible weather. As they sail into the mountainous seas, Mowzer sings a lullaby to calm the Great Storm-Cat of the sea. Tom catches enough fish to feed the entire village. And to this day the people of Mousehole hold a procession and feast every Christmas in memory of brave Tom Bawcock.

What to do with them once you get here? This little book is full of good ideas that you and your children will love to do in Cornwall. Everything in Kids Cornwall has been tried and tested by families who live in Cornwall, which means that we have worked out all the little details of where to park, whether or not to take a buggy, or whether it is worth risking the cafe!
We are not just talking about the attractions that you might know about; Kids Cornwall is a quirky mix of walks, restaurants, games, days out and silly things to do to pass the time on a beach or in the woods. Cornwall is a fantastic place for kids – full of wonderful adventures and lasting memories.
The lovely thing about Kids Cornwall is that all the money raised from its sale benefits Cornish kids. In the six years since it was first published over £10,000 has been raised and used to improve facilities for children in the school and wider community of the small village of Gorran, on the south coast of Cornwall. Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier
Of course if all that is just too strenuous then lose yourself in a great read and I can think of no other novel that so quickly sums up Cornwall. This is the perfect Cornish book to read whilst here. 'This chilling, suspenseful tale is as fresh and readable as it was when it was first written’ For years I had dismissed this book as a soppy love story. Then I read it! This is a lovely, dark tale full of menace and secrets.

Up with the Larks – Tessa Hainsworth
Maybe you love it here so much that you decide to stay. You won’t be alone – find out how the Roseland aquired it’s very own Posh Postie as Tessa Hainsworth uped sticks and moved to the Roseland. Having given up a high-powered job and the lifestyle to match, Tessa had no idea how hard she would struggle when, full of optimism, she fulfilled her dream of moving to rural Cornwall with her young family one September. Within months, she is almost ready to return to London, tail between her legs: her husband is still out of work, her children are struggling in a cold, damp, tumbledown house and the family is running out of money – fast. But a chance encounter in the local post office leads her to accept the unlikeliest of job offers. Up with the Larks charts Tessa’s turbulent first year with the Royal Mail, and her transformation from outsider to ‘Posh Postie’, adopted Cornishwoman and much-loved member of her new community, here in the Roseland.
